A gift from Zions Bank President and CEO Scott Anderson, and the SLCC Foundation, in honor of Deneece Huftalin's leadership as President of Salt Lake Community College 2014-2024.
“Utah Women 2020” is a massive community art project conceived by Pop artist and soft-sculpture pioneer Jann Haworth. It features the work of nearly 300 artists and community members who collaborated to create over 350 individual portraits, celebrating the width and breadth of the contributions that women have made to the vibrant culture of Utah.
INCEPTION
It is important to understand that there are two versions of this mural, both of which are on view in Salt Lake City. The first iteration was commissioned in 2018 by retired Zions Bank CEO Scott Anderson who partnered with Jann Haworth to commemorate Utah women at the hundred-year anniversary of women’s suffrage in 2020.
Haworth recruited community participants from all over Utah and abroad to create these life-size portraits, most of which were created in people’s homes during the COVID quarantine. Haworth and her son Alex Johnstone used digital compositing to create an enormous 5,000 square foot printed version of the mural which is currently displayed in downtown Salt Lake City on the Dinwoodey Building, located at 37 W. 100 South.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT and WORK IN PROGRESS
The timing of the mural not only celebrated the anniversary of voting rights for women in 1920, but also coincides with the anniversaries of the 1917 Tuskegee Race Massacre and the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918-19. Making this community mural under lockdown is a story in itself and in this case really does embody Utah’s unique character and generosity.
“This mural is about equality and fair representation—the women in it are from all walks of life. And, it has been created by individuals from all backgrounds, many not formal artists but who are students, teachers, nurses, athletes, performers, and lawyers. It opened the art process to everyone,” explained Haworth.
Known as co-designer of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band” album cover (which earned her a Grammy), Haworth set out to create a new mural that was in part an apology for the lack of female inclusions in 1967 Sgt. Pepper’s cover — thus, the “SLC Pepper” mural went up at 250 So. 400 W. in downtown Salt Lake City in 2014.

The “Utah Women 2020” mural is an extension of Jann and Liberty’s collaborative ‘Work in Progress Mural Project,’ a 100ft long collaged mural, consisting of stencil portraits of women made by members of the community in workshops. Work in Progress panels have been commissioned by The National Portrait Gallery in London, The World Economic Forum and TED Women.

THE NEW MURAL
In 2024, a few years had passed, and the original paper portraits needed a home. Hannah Barrett, the Public Art Coordinator at the Utah Department of Arts & Museums contacted James Walton who manages the permanent art collection at SLCC. The college gladly accepted the gift as a welcome addition to their collection and partnered with Zions Bank to commission Haworth and collage artist Liberty Blake to create a new version of the mural.
Everyone involved was excited by the educational potential of this project being displayed at the college, where students can engage with the art and learn about the larger-than-life figures and unsung heroes from the state’s history who are honored in this wide ranging, ambitious work.
During the summer of 2024, Liberty Blake and Haworth gathered and prepped the hundreds of individual portraits. Panels were built, and Liberty began the collage work, positioning heads in a new order and design.

Visual Art & Design students at the college, along with SLCC employees and a handful of community members were invited to participate is a workshop with Jann and Liberty to recreate some of the lost portraits, using the original stencils.

No longer a digital print, this massive collage containing hundreds of original artworks is a moving testament to community and to the remarkable legacy of Utah women throughout history.
Jann Haworth

Jann Haworth is a prominent British-American artist closely associated with the 1960s Pop Art Movement in Great Britain. She has had 25 solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States, including Gazelli Art House, London (2021/23/24), Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, UK (2019/20] and the Brigham Young University Museum of Art (2013). She is currently featured in the Pop Forever show at Louis Vuitton Foundation, Paris; Iconic Portraiture at The Holburne Museum, Bath UK; the Work in Progress Mural at The World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland; and the National Portrait Gallery London with co-creator Liberty Blake.
Known as a female Pop Artist and co-designer of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band” album cover (which earned her a Grammy), Haworth has exhibited widely in major group shows, including at The Tate, mumok Vienna, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, Spain, Walker Art Center, USA.
She has led several public art projects in Salt Lake City, including the “Utah Women’s Mural” [Alex Johnstone, Liberty Blake and Jann Haworth], celebrating the centenary of women's voting rights. Her work is part of public collections, including The Tate, mumok, Moderna Museet, The Walker Art Center, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
Liberty Blake

Born in England in 1968, Liberty grew up in an alternative, arts-centric environment that encouraged self-expression and creativity. Her unconventional education formed the foundation of her love for art, outdoor adventure, and the natural world. Liberty studied Foundation Art and illustration at Sydney Place Foundation and Bath Academy of Art. She moved to Utah in 1997.
In 2007 she participated in the "337 Project" in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she created the first of many large-scale ‘wall collages.’ The most recent of which is the collaborative ‘Work in Progress Mural Project,’ a 100ft long collaged mural, consisting of stencil portraits of women made by members of the community in workshops that she runs with her mother and fellow artist, Jann Haworth. Work in Progress panels have been commissioned by The National Portrait Gallery in London, The World Economic Forum and TED Women. The Utah Women’s Mural is an extension of this project.
Liberty currently lives and works in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her abstract collages are a document of the wild natural places and neglected urban environments of Utah. She has shown extensively in Utah and abroad, in group and solo shows. She is represented by The Phillips Gallery in Salt Lake City.
