Concurrent Enrollment

General Registration Appeals

A Registration Appeal may be an option if a student has experienced extenuating circumstances that were beyond their control and prevented them from completing a semester or dropping/withdrawing within the published deadline. We understand that life happens so students can appeal by providing documentation to prove their extenuating circumstance and how it was out of their control.

A completed Registration Appeals Form, a personal statement along with appropriate supportive documentation must be provided. A separate appeal is required for each semester. A maximum of three appeals may be granted during a student’s SLCC academic career. Appeals are granted for exceptional circumstances and are not guaranteed approval.

After review, the student will receive notification on whether the appeal has been granted or denied via their SLCC Bruinmail account within 2-4 weeks. The student’s high school will also be notified. Decisions made by the appeals committee are final.

Generally, exceptions are made only in those cases where events affecting enrollment are nonrecurring, catastrophic, life-threatening and beyond the student’s control. Regardless of the circumstance, documentation must be provided with current dates and are pertaining to the term in question.

The following are not considered exceptional circumstances:

  • Over-commitment
  • Inability to pay tuition
  • Misunderstanding deadlines or policies
  • Difficult course material
  • Change in career or major goals
  • Non-attendance
  • Academic Concern - as noted in the Student Code, a student may make a formal complaint to the faculty member or go directly to the Department or Division Chair. See Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Appeals will automatically be denied for the following:

  • Semesters that received an A through D- grade
  • Semesters that are older than five years
  • Appeals submitted without proper documentation.
  • Appeals requesting to drop/withdraw from individual courses in a semester.

Appeal for Students under the age of 15 to participate in concurrent enrollment

Per SLCC Policy, students who “are under the age of 15 are expected to have exhausted all educational resources at the secondary level before petitioning for special status at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC).” For those rare and exceptional circumstances in which a student under the age of 15 has exhausted all educational resources at the secondary level, is motivated, and is academically and socially prepared to engage in college level coursework, this form can be used to petition for participation in concurrent enrollment coursework.

After the completing the form and submitting it to the Concurrent Enrollment Office with the required documentation, the appeal will be reviewed by a committee within 10 business days. After review, the student and high school will receive notification on whether the appeal has been granted or denied via email. Decisions made by the appeals committee are final.

Concurrent On-Campus 3 Course Limit Appeal

Per SLCC Concurrent Enrollment policy high school junior (11th graders) and senior (12th graders) CE students are not allowed to take more than 3 classes per semester on a SLCC campus including online classes. Freshman (9th graders) and Sophomores (10th graders) are not allowed to participate in the SLCC Concurrent On-Campus Program, however they are allowed to take concurrent enrollment classes in any participating high school in which they are counted in the average daily membership. There is no appeal process for Freshman and Sophomores to participate in the Concurrent On-Campus Program.

Students whose academic plan is impossible to achieve without taking more than 3 concurrent enrollment classes on a SLCC campus may appeal to take more than 3 CE classes on a SLCC campus through the Concurrent On-Campus Program using the form below.

Students in concurrent enrollment are not allowed to take more than 18 concurrent enrollment credits per semester and more than 30 credits per year. There is no appeal process for these credit limits.
