Privacy Statement for Salt Lake Community College (SLCC)

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is committed to respecting your privacy. This privacy statement governs the collection and use of information through official SLCC websites and SLCC-published mobile applications. Please read this Privacy Statement carefully to understand your rights. By using SLCC websites or SLCC-published mobile applications, you agree to the terms outlined below.

  • Personally Identifiable Information (PII): Any information that can be used to identify or distinguish an individual. This includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, or any other data that, when combined, can identify a specific person. 
  • SLCC Websites: These are the official online platforms owned and operated by SLCC, providing information, services, and resources related to the institution. 
  • SLCC-Published Mobile Applications: Mobile software developed and owned by SLCC that is available for download on authorized app stores. These applications provide tailored functionalities and access to features on mobile devices. 
  • Users: Individuals visiting, accessing, or using SLCC websites or SLCC-published mobile applications. 

What Information We Collect 

We collect personal information from visitors to SLCC websites only when explicitly and voluntarily provided. We avoid collecting data regarding political opinions, religious beliefs, health status, or sexual orientation. Here are the key points: 

  1. Collection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII):
    • We collect PII whenever you voluntarily submit it to SLCC websites, including your name, email, mailing address, telephone number, and preferences regarding SLCC services. 
    • We do not sell, share, or distribute your PII to third parties except as required by law or college policy. 
  2. Non-Personally Identifiable Information:
    • We collect generic information through “cookies” to evaluate usage patterns and improve content and distribution. 
    • Cookies are text files placed on your computer during your session. You can adjust your browser settings to manage cookies. 
  3. Statistical Logs:
    • We use reporting programs to collect data about visitor traffic to our site. 
    • We analyze data in aggregate to determine trends and enhance our sites. 
  4. Data Security:
    • We have implemented physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard data and prevent unauthorized access. 
    • Personal information is not intentionally released to others except as permitted by law. 
  5. Other Sources and Third-party Services 
    • SLCC may receive information about you from other sources, including third parties that help us update, expand, and analyze our records, identify new customers, or prevent or detect fraud.
    • SLCC may also receive information about you from social media platforms, including but not limited to, when you access our social media content or interact with us on these platforms. The information we may receive is governed by the privacy settings, policies, and/or procedures of the applicable social media platform; therefore, we encourage you to review them. 

Collection and Use of Phone Numbers for Texting Purposes 

  1. Phone Numbers Collected: We collect phone numbers to send SMS communications related to our services. These phone numbers are used solely for legitimate educational or business purposes. 
  2. Purpose of SMS Communications: By providing your phone number, you consent to receive our SMS messages. These messages may include transactional updates, service notifications, and other relevant information about our offerings. 
  3. SMS Consent: When collecting phone numbers through our website or other channels, we will inform you about our intended use of your information.
  4. Intake Form: Our public website will feature an Intake Form where students can provide their consent explicitly. A statement such as “By checking this box, I provide my consent to receive SMS messages” will be prominently displayed. 
  5. SMS Opt-Out Option: If you no longer wish to receive SMS communications from us, you can opt-out. Reply to any SMS message with the word “STOP,” and we will remove your number from our list. 
  6. Emergency Alert System: SLCC’s emergency alert system is an “Opt-Out” system. This means that current active students are automatically registered for this service and must opt-out to stop it.   7. Third-Party Sharing: We do not share phone numbers collected with third parties for marketing purposes.

Use of Information

By submitting information to SLCC via its websites, you agree that, following federal or state law, SLCC may use this information for the specific reasons for which it was provided. This may include:

  • Providing you with requested information
  • Processing admission or employment applications

  • Fulfilling orders for goods or services
  • Informing you of products or services

International Visitors 

  • By providing information to SLCC, you consent to use of your personal data in the United States. 
  • If you are not a resident of the United States, your country’s laws governing data collection and use may differ.

    • The Information Security Policy sets requirements for all employees, students, and college administrative units to comply with applicable laws and provide necessary security standards to protect the privacy rights of college community members and ensure the integrity of college information assets, systems, and resources. The policy emphasizes data protection, authentication, and incident response procedures. 
  2. Acceptable Use of College Computing Resources Policy:
    • The Acceptable Use Policy ensures the proper use of resources following the mission of SLCC and protects the college community and college property. 
  3. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) Policy:
    • FERPA affords eligible students certain rights regarding their education records. 
  4. Data Governance Policy:
    • The Data Governance Policy recognizes institutional data as an asset and emphasizes its security and quality.

Access and Corrections of Personal Information 

SLCC allows students to access and correct their personal information. Students can update their personal information, such as their address, phone number, and email, through the 'MySLCC' portal. They can also submit a 'Change of Personal Information' form to the Office of the Registrar and Academic Records.

Additionally, under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), students have the right to review and request corrections to their education records.

Utah Government Records Access and Management Act 

As a public institution, and instrumentality of the State of Utah, SLCC is subject to the Government Records Access and Management Act of the Utah Code, Section 63G-2-101 et seq., 1953, as may be amended (“GRAMA”). This means that records, in all forms including email, provided to SLCC are subject to public disclosure, unless the record is designated by law as confidential or not a public record.
