Beyond the Podium

Salt Lake Community College introduces Beyond the Podium, a groundbreaking partnership with US Speedskating, US Ski & Snowboard, and USA Climbing.

Beyond the Podium provides free tuition and flexible schedules, ensuring elite athletes don't have to choose between education and competition. The program also addresses the critical need to support athletes as they transition to life after their sporting careers by providing not just educational opportunities but also career counseling and internships with corporate partners.

Made possible by a generous gift from Jeff and Helen Cardon, Beyond the Podium provides a crucial post-competition career pathway for athletes whose identities are often deeply tied to their sport. Already supporting over 19 athletes, many of whom are aiming for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, this collaboration reflects SLCC's core mission of providing access and opportunity to all.

Your support is the foundation for Olympic dreams and lifelong success.

I wanted to find what would provide me the best ability to pivot and not feel like I was regressing in anyway in my personal and professional life. I am taking classes now so I can walk away with a degree, with skills gained through education and skills gained from my professional ski career.

I want an education, and I think I have a unique opportunity with all the help and collaboration between SLCC and the US team. I'm taking advantage of it and seeing where it takes me. After I finish skiing, it will be huge that I have been in school and have another plan to pursue.

This is a full-time job and commitment. Doing it for 20-plus years and seeing the end coming was a bit of an identity crisis, but then it turned into a huge gift—a chance to grow as an individual and give myself a chance at what is next.

Training can be isolating, especially if it's going rough. It may not always feel like you're progressing, but school keeps you busy and your mind busy. SLCC provides lots of flexibility—taking exams around the world and finding a proctor in Japan can be a bit tough!
