At SLCC, we know that learning isn't restricted to a classroom. Whether you're coming to SLCC directly from high school with AP tests under your belt, or you've worked in your industry for a few years and you're working on your degree, you may already know the content of some of the courses you're taking. Credit for Prior Learning is the pathway to get your knowledge evaluated, the equivalent course(s) recorded on your transcript, and get you on your way sooner.

What is Credit for Prior Learning?

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is the process by which your college-level learning that has occurred outside a traditional academic environment can be assessed and applied as college credit. In order to make sure that credit awarded through CPL is consistent and equitable, the following requirements apply:

  • Only current students at SLCC are eligible. Students must be working towards a degree, certificate, or apprenticeship. If you're wanting to use your AP scores to satisfy prerequisites for Concurrent Enrollment, we're working directly with the high schools to get that taken care of.
  • Credit awarded must fulfill either your general education or your program requirements. The course must be in the current, approved catalog, and the course must be a credit-awarding course.
  • CPL can't duplicate previously earned credit – if you're asking for ENGL 1010 but already took the course, we won't be able to award another round of ENGL 1010.

Before you apply, here's some more information about Credit for Prior Learning you should know:

  • CPL doesn't give you a letter grade. Any credit awarded through CPL is posted with "PL" as the grade, instead of "A", "B", "C", etc...
  • If you need a letter grade for financial aid or selective admissions, CPL may not be the best path for you.
  • CPL counts towards the maximum time frame to graduation for federal financial aid purposes. If you're receiving any form of financial aid, talk to your financial aid advisor before applying for CPL.
  • CPL is different than college credit transferred to SLCC.
