The past seven years of developing and carrying out the strategic plan have been eventful, and involved dozens of SLCC faculty and staff. This timeline shows how far we have come, from revising our mission, vision, and value in 2015 to launching our final strategic plan update in 2021. 2015: College-wide Planning Process
A college-wide planning process kicked off the 2015 cycle. The Institutional Effectiveness Council determined that SLCC needed a new mission statement to improve both internal and external understanding of the college’s mission. A new set of institutional values was also created, including Collaboration, Community, Inclusivity, Integrity, Innovation, Learning and Trust.

2016: Launched "Your Community College"
The College Planning Council (CPC) was created in 2016 to steer the development and implementation of strategic college initiatives. The CPC consisted of the Provost, Vice Presidents, and other senior leaders. The CPC was tasked with commissioning Collaborative Work Teams (CWTs) to carry out college-wide projects to further the strategic work. The “Your Community College” strategic plan was launched.

2017: Twelve New Strategies Introduced
In 2017, two new CWT’s were introduced. The Equity-Minded Practitioner CWT strategy leads developed an Equity Reflection Guide to better understand the campus working environment and climate, and to plan for adjustments department- or division-wide. Making Community Engagement a Cultural Norm sponsored the first SLCC Day of Service to encourage employees to use their Community Engagement leave to provide service to our communities. SLCC made big changes in our efforts to financially support students, rolling out both SLCC Promise, which awarded 224 students with assistance for the 2017-2018 academic year, and Open Educational Resources (OER), an initiative that saved students 1 million dollars per semester by not having to purchase traditional textbooks.

2018: Strategic Planning Process Update
From groundbreaking in 2016 to completion in 2018, the Westpointe Workforce Training and Education Center was destined to become a central hub for all things related to our workforce strategy. Westpointe continues to function as the central location to provide students interested in technical careers with the information and access they need for success. Opening this new campus was the first step in becoming Salt Lake County’s primary post-secondary provider of workforce education.

2019: Five Collaborative Work Teams Assigned
The Open Educational Resources initiative experienced strong growth and we achieved our “5 in 5” goal of saving students $5 million in 5 years. SLCC also became a national leader in competency-based education (CBE) in our strategy to Align with and Respond to Workforce Needs. More flexible and affordable than traditional courses, students in CBE can advance through the material at their own pace as they demonstrate mastery of the concepts.
Pathways areas of study were officially rolled out, encouraging students who were undecided on a program to select one from among eight areas of study. This change signaled the phasing out of the General Studies major.

2020: EDICT: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion Council for Transformation Was Established
Maintaining the same nineteen strategies in 2020 allowed us to move into an implementation phase. The Search Advocacy program scaled up significantly, training 47 faculty and staff members to ensure hiring processes are culturally sensitive. The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council for Transformation (EDICT) was formed to broaden and embed equity, diversity, and inclusivity work across all divisions. This was reflected in 2020’s SLCC 360 keynote speaker Dr. Tia McNair, a nationally renowned scholar and vice president of AACU, who encouraged us to “walk the equity walk” in our practices.

2021: Final Strategic Plan Update
A new primary focus of the college was our status as an emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). As the demographics of our service area change, the number of Hispanic and Latinx students attending SLCC has increased significantly. We are now poised to become the first federally designated HSI in the state. As such, we are making efforts to collaborate with the communities we serve to become an identity-enhancing institution, welcoming and supporting students from all backgrounds.
