“Our goal is to create a beloved community, and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.”

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1966)

The Dr. Clifton G. Sanders Institute at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is dedicated to the development of meaningful relationships of collaboration between all peoples, based on institutional commitments to learning, reconciliation, and community.

Developed to honor the work and dedication of SLCC Provost Emeritus Dr. Clifton Sanders, the Institute collaborates with SLCC faculty, staff, administration, and students, as well as external partners, to create programs that foster the process and empowerment of learning, the reconciliation of our differences, and the celebration of our communities.

The Sanders Institute serves as the home of the annual Judge Michael Wei Kwan Lecture Series on Justice and Equity and the Beloved Community Photography Project and Celebratory Concert. The Institute also houses rotating faculty fellows who contribute to developing programs seeking to imbed the humanistic philosophy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in SLCC’s educational and extracurricular activities. The current institute fellows are Assistant Professors Sahar Al-Shoubaki (Humanities) and Cindy O. Fierros (Psychology and Ethnic Studies).
