Health Information Specialist (KHI2)

The Health Information Specialist training program prepares students to work in the medical records offices of hospitals, larger medical clinics, doctors' offices, and insurance companies. It provides basic clerical training in computer concepts, customer service, business communications, word processing, spreadsheets, job-seeking skills, medical terminology, medical office software, electronic health records, medical law and ethics, and HIPAA Certification. This curriculum includes an 80-hour cooperative externship at a medical facility in the medical records department.

Course/Program Delivery Model
This program is offered in a Competency Based Education (CBE) format. It is divided into several payment periods consisting of 10-weeks each, except for the final one which is variable in length. This allows students to accelerate and complete as many courses as they can within each of those time periods while the tuition and fees remain fixed. Students will be expected to invest a minimum of 16 to 24 hours per week on coursework and will enroll in each course according to the established sequence in the catalog.

Requirements
Prospective students must have been assessed (TABE) within 90 days prior to enrollment:
- Reading: 8.0
- Math: 6.5
- Keyboarding speed of 30 CWPM (correct words per minute) on a 5 minute timing
- 10 Key speed of 5,000 sph (strokes per hour) on a 5-minute timing with 98% accuracy
