Student Athletes from Salt Lake Community College’s seven sports visit schools throughout the fall and spring semesters as part of the Know Greater Heroes program. The athletes lead students through a high-energy, action-packed educational elementary school assembly where they sing, dance with the audience and perform skits to teach and emphasize:

  • the language of leaders
  • moving their bodies through dance, exercise and sports feels good
  • anything is possible if they are committed
  • drugs are a trap – they must stay far away

Beloved Community Program

To honor and apply Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision for societies that embrace cooperation, unity, and connection, the Beloved Community Program encourages photography by local students that showcases their own cherished neighborhoods. This program provides students access to cameras and instruction on how to use them by SLCC photography faculty and students. After participating in classroom activities that explore Dr. King's legacy, led by a faculty member from the SLCC English department, the students take photos that highlight their own "beloved” connections with their communities, which are displayed in a public gallery exhibit each February in the Eccles Art Gallery at SLCC's South City Campus. Program involves a 1 to 1.5 hour visit to participating class, with subsequent follow up in coordination with participating teacher.

College Knowledge 101 for Students

The College Knowlege 101 presentations at the elementary level provide foundational knowledge for students to help empower and equip them to pursue a successful future. This requires an understanding of essential skills necessary for success in both school and workplace, an awareness of why people work and how that is connected to school, and introduction to the idea of college, an exploration of career choices and the role money plays in achieving both short and long-term goals. The presentations are divided into K-3 and 4-6 grade levels and include active, hands-on work with concrete materials, authentic tasks and appropriate technologies. There are up to six modules for each of the two levels that can stand alone or build on each other. Individual module information available upon request.

Appropriate for individual classrooms and grade-level assemblies.

Portable Planetarium Astronomy Instruction

Bring the Universe to your students with SLCC's inflatable portable planetarium. Explore the cosmos with live interactive planetarium shows. The inflatable dome requires 16 feet by 16 feet of open floor space and an 11-foot ceiling for clearance. Carpeted areas are preferred.

Appropriate for classroom presentations with a max space for 40 children or 25 adults.

Clouds, Thunderstorms, Tornados – Oh My!

Explore how clouds form and create one in the classroom in a fishtank using dry ice and water. Identify the four major cloud types and learn the cloud dance. Discover how thunderstorms create tornadoes and witness tornado formation from wind shear and updrafts in the Tornado Machine.
