HOW TO APPLY
Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is the first step in becoming successful in any healthcare field. This program provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the State of Utah Nursing Assistant certification requirements. Students learn the duties and responsibilities of a nursing assistant to provide for the physical, physiological, and psychological needs of patients within a hospital or long-term care facility.
The curriculum includes an overall introduction to human relations, anatomy, physiology, and bacteriology, as well as consideration of body mechanics, disease processes, and therapeutic approaches. Skills learned include (but are not limited to) communication, infection prevention, universal precautions, positioning and ambulation, monitoring vital signs, hygiene/grooming, feeding, toileting, and bathing.

Requirements
A reading sample comparable to the textbooks used in this program is available to assist students in evaluating their ability to complete the program successfully. Please ask your advisor for the sample during your appointment.
Immunizations
- Hepatitis B (proof of three dose vaccination or proof of immunity by titer). *Student may start the CNA program with proof of first dose of Hepatitis B vaccination.
- MMR (proof of two dose vaccination or proof of immunity by titer)
- 2-step PPD or Quantiferon – this requires two separate Tuberculin skin tests with negative results or Quantiferon blood test with negative result. If a positive result is given, proof of a current chest x-ray with a negative result.
- Varicella (Chickenpox) - (proof of two dose vaccination or proof of immunity by titer). A letter from the physician stating childhood exposure will not be accepted.
- TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) given within the past 10 years
- Influenza (given October 1 - March 31) – required yearly
- Covid immunization – Required by most clinical sites. Proof of two dose immunization. If not immunized, a face shield and mask must be worn at all times during the clinical shifts.
Background Check, Drug Screening, and Immunizations Compliance
Salt Lake Technical College has contracted the services from American DataBank utilizing a comprehensive tool for student screening, immunizations, and compliance. This tool, named Complio, is configured to screen for each of the items listed above based on SLTech requirements. Students need to create an account with Complio and SLTC will be notified when compliance has been met.

Classes start every week on Mondays at the Jordan Campus.
The West Valley campus offers an in-person lecture-based course over 16 weeks. Contact an advisor for upcoming start dates.
Course/Program Delivery Model
The Self-Paced Program at our Jordan Campus is offered in a Competency Based Education (CBE) format. This allows students at the Jordan campus to accelerate and complete the program as soon as competency is demonstrated. Students will be expected to invest a minimum of 8 hours per week on coursework and will enroll in each course according to the established sequence in the catalog.
The Course at the West Valley campus is cohort-based and delivered in a lecture-based format and will take 16 weeks.
Either model of instruction will result in a letter grade and 3 Semester Credits on your SLCC transcript.
Students receiving Federal Financial Aid or VA funding please contact your academic advisor for specific information regarding eligibility.
Other
- 16 years old at enrollment. Students would need to be 18 years old to work in an acute care hospital setting but younger students may obtain employment in a long-term care setting.
- Current Nationwide Criminal Background check (issued by ADB Complio).
- Drug Screen (10 panel) prior to enrollment - from SLCC approved provider (ADB Complio).
- Ability to help lift and/or move patients.
- Not listed on the sex offender web site.
