Program Overview

Salt Lake Community College and the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) are partnering to provide math courses required for middle school and special education-licensed teachers seeking a Special Education Mathematics or Middle School Mathematics Endorsement. Participants will be able to finish their endorsement while attending classes specifically designed for middle school/special education teachers.

This 45-hour, 3-credit course is for special education teachers seeking a Secondary Special Education Mathematics Endorsement or the Alternate Pathway to Professional Educator License-Special Education (APPEL-SPED). This course provides educators with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to teach mathematics effectively at the secondary level. Emphasizing alignment with grade-level standards, the course systematically designs instruction toward a specific learning goal by integrating cross-disciplinary skills, a variety of instructional strategies, and the application of mathematical concepts in real-world contexts.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Deepen algebraic content knowledge across number systems, functions, ratios, proportions, and their historical development
  • Apply instructional strategies aligned to high school algebra standards using real-world tasks and mathematical discourse
  • Design and evaluate assessments to surface student thinking and inform instructional decisions
  • Analyze standards progressions to understand how algebraic concepts connect across grade levels
  • Integrate technology strategically using best practices that enhance student mathematical understanding
