Play a Game with your Characters: Building Character Bibles Using TTRPG Character Sheets

1-part workshop
Saturday, February 7, 12-2 pm

In this two-hour workshop, participants will learn about "character bibles" and how they can be useful as a character development/writing tool. We will discuss character creation using tools from games like Thirsty Sword Lesbians, D&D, Daggerheart, and Vampire of the Masquerade. Participants will apply these tools to one character in their writing and create their own template for future use.

Unlocking the Meaning of Memories: Writing Creative Nonfiction as a Way to Understand What Happened

Our lives are filled with moments, some of which stand out more than others. In this workshop, writers will learn how to go beyond the basic diary entry to discover the deeper reasons why a memory is meaningful. Using examples from published works as well as in-class exercises, participants will be encouraged to tune into sensory detail and their internal experiences in order to capture—and better understand—life moments, big or small, in meaningful ways.

Illuminated Pages: A Poetic & Visual Art Workshop

2-part workshop
Thursdays, April 16 & 23, 6-8 pm

In this two-part workshop, we will utilize historical and contemporary techniques for merging art and literature. In part one, we will learn about historic Renaissance poetry and art methods for creating beautifully illuminated manuscripts. In part two, we will fuse mixed media types and modern writing styles to produce breathtaking personal expressions. Each student will take home two works of art. All art supplies provided.

Frolic and Fluff: Writing Cozy Fiction

Sometimes we want a story that just makes us feel good while still offering interesting characters, problem solving, and romantic entanglement. Low stakes fiction does not mean no stakes. As writers, our best tool is how to use tension to grab our readers, murder and mayhem not required, and take them on a journey. In this class we will break down methods to best add to your writing toolkit.

A beginner's introduction to publishing contracts, copyright, public domain, fair use, and other legal concerns for writers. We'll challenge the publishing myths many new writers are exposed to and sort fact from rumor. From fan fiction to brand names and everything in between, learn what's allowed, how to stay out of trouble, and how to protect your rights as a creator.

Writing with Tarot

1-part workshop
Wednesday, May 13, 6-8 pm

This is a workshop for writers of all levels who want to use tarot as a creative tool to develop characters, explore plot twists, and overcome writer's block. In this hands-on session, you'll learn what tarot is (and isn't), how to use the cards to generate ideas, and practical techniques to tap into intuition for storytelling. Whether you're starting a new project or stuck on a scene, tarot can offer unexpected insights and new directions. Bring your own deck if you have one, or use one provided in class!
