Center for Latin American Studies

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at SLCC, is an interdisciplinary center focused on supporting Latin-American based activities including teaching, research and community engagement. Thanks to the support and partnership with the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Utah, we have seen an increased interest in Latin American topics and academic engagement.

CLAS at Salt Lake Community College looks for on campus opportunities to build interdisciplinary collaboration between different departments while providing students with opportunities to think of academic topics through various lenses. Another way in which CLAS supports our student population is by linking professors whose areas of expertise lie within Latin America and students with personal ties to the area, to create unique learning opportunities to see personal experiences validated in the classroom. CLAS is part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Partnership

Our partnership with CLAS at the University of Utah provides support for our Nahuatl class, annual events like the Indigenous Language Summit, and unique transfer scholarship application support through FLAS scholarships.

SLCC CLAS connects students with the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Utah to provide similar resources and opportunities.

Courses

Cultures and Languages Across de Curriculum is a pedagogical framework where discipline specific courses are taught in a variety of target languages. This helps students with their academic development as they strengthen their professional skills and expand their linguistic abilities.

Usually, these courses are tied to an anchor course taught in English. Students enroll in an additional course that meets once a week to discuss topics from the main course while they study additional materials in the target language.

Current courses offered
