Resolving Quality Concerns
The experience that occurs in the concurrent enrollment classroom is the most important part of the Concurrent Enrollment experience. When an instructor teaches the SLCC curriculum in a way that mirrors SLCC standard, and delivers a college experience in his or her classroom, students develop the skills they need to successfully transition to college after high school and persist to completion. When this doesn’t happen it sets up a false expectation for students that can negatively impact them when they ultimately transition to college.
Additionally, CE instructors are required to complete the following responsibilities:
- Complete the New Concurrent Enrollment Instructor onboarding training;
- Receive training on the SLCC curriculum by the SLCC faculty liaison;
- Teach the SLCC curriculum in full and use SLCC approved assessments for the courses the instructor has been approved to teach.
- Upload a CE course syllabus to MyCE, that aligns with the SLCC syllabus, annually;
- Attend at least two hours of discipline-specific professional development and two hours of general concurrent enrollment training annually;
- Facilitate student course evaluations each semester;
- Participate in and facilitate liaison visits and peer reviews/evaluations.
Corrective Action Steps
For a positive, impactful college experience to occur, CE instructors are expected to fulfill all of these responsibilities. When a CE instructor fails to meet these expectations the following steps will be taken:
- The liaison or the CE Office is typically the first to identify that there is a problem. In cases where the liaison first identifies the issue, the liaison will immediately discuss the issue with the CE instructor, come up with a plan to make corrections, and outline a timeline (that make sense given the issue) for improvement. In the cases where the CE Office identifies an issue first, they will notify the liaison who will initially discuss the concern with the CE instructor, and come up with a plan and timeline for improvement.
- The liaison should then follow up on the date determined by the CE instructor and the liaison. If at that time the teacher has improved the issue can be considered resolved.
- If the teacher has not improved at that point the liaison should again discuss the issue, come up with and plan and a timeline for improvement, and should immediately notify the CE Director.
- The CE Director will then notify the principal and CE coordinator of the issue and improvement plan.
- The liaison will then make one final visit to see if the CE instructor has improved. If at that time the teacher has improved the issue can be considered resolved, however the liaison will continue to follow up over the next year to ensure that the teacher continues to implement the changes discussed.
If the CE instructor has not improved the principal, CE coordinator, and teacher will be notified that approval will be withdrawn the following semester. The teacher may at that time reach out to the CE director, principal, and CE coordinator to make one last attempt to improve if they choose, and if they can make the change by the end of the semester in a way that is satisfactory to the liaison, they will be placed on probation for the upcoming semester and the liaison will continue to monitor that the issue has been fully resolved. If the issue returns the following semester, approval will be withdrawn at the end of that semester.
