Department Purpose
In the English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies department, we teach students how to use language to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts, including academic, creative, business, and technical. The department offers programs in reading, writing, and critical thinking to a diverse student body at a premier comprehensive community college while enhancing the development and professional expertise of our instructors to meet the changing needs of our students.
The work of our department includes:
- Meeting the composition requirements for the college
- Providing a foundation in reading and writing for students who need support to meet the requirements of transfer-level courses
- Providing the first two years of traditional undergraduate degree work for successful transfer to degree programs at four-year institutions
- Providing a certificate program for students whose career plans require advanced reading and writing skills
- Offering concurrent enrollment courses for high school students
