Jesse Valdez, SLCC AS Communications Studies in 2016, From Hunter High School

Then and Now

After high school, I knew I wanted to go to college, but I didn't know what I wanted to do. I took some time off, then a friend convinced me to start at SLCC with him spring semester. The college was down the street from where I grew up, so it was familiar to me.

It took me a few years to figure it out. I spent five years at SLCC and had a lot of fun. A friend and I got permission to bring back and redesign an on-campus sports show, called End of the Bench. I also started a sports club that included a tackle football team, because we figured the Bruin's needed a football team. I even ran for student association president, but I didn't win.

Initially I just focused on earning an associate's in General Education, then I started taking some communication classes and was blown away by the media and broadcasting facilities at South City. I earned an AS in Communication and was well prepared when I landed a job at Channel 4.

I am now a senior photojournalist at ABC4. I love that my "office" is wherever the story is in Utah.
