"¡Arriba Mi Bandera: Musica, Cultura y Tradición!"

This year's theme is "Arriba Mi Bandera: ¡Música, Cultura y Tradición!"

As members of the Latinx community, we share an immigrant story that started in our native lands—whether that story began with us or those that came before us. Our country's flags are important to us because it allows us to carry a little piece of our home at all times and to all parts of the world. It also is a way for us to identify and connect with each other and create community and family away home. This year, our flags will wave high through a series of events that will celebrate the diversity in our music, our cultures, and our traditions!

Taste of Diversity

Taste of Diversity is an annual cultural celebration event that has been taking place since 2018. Each year students from the multicultural club Global Connections and Kurdish Student Leadership select a culture represented in their membership and this year they are showcasing “Sabores de Latinoamerica” (Flavors of Latin America). Please join us as we showcase flavors from Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Perú! There will also be a short dance workshop and performances!

On the Menu: Highlighting UndocuNarratives

We’ll be highlighting various Latin countries that celebrate their independence days in September. In addition, the Mexican Consulate will be joining us to share how they celebrate their Independence Day in Utah, what services they provide and how they support other Latin communities in the area.

Grupo Folklórico Nonatzin: El Camino a Nuestras Raíces

Grupo Folklorico Nonatzin is passionate about Mexican cultural traditions. The group was created in 2016 and since has performed all throughout the Salt Lake Valley. During Latinx Heritage Celebration Month 2022, their performance titled “El Camino a Nuestras Raices,” includes bailes folkloricos (folk dances) from Veracruz, Jalisco, Oaxaca, and Guerrero! We welcome everyone to come and enjoy a little bit of beautiful Mexican culture through food and dance!

Business Etiquette en Español: Workshops for Student Success

Faculty in the Business Department at SLCC will be hosting two workshops on Spanish greetings to use with customers and on vowel and common consonant sounds in the Spanish language. Additionally, there will be posters of Latin America with information about the Latinx population, Latinx countries, and their flags. 

Music & Movement from Latin America with Jocelyn Fonua

Jocelyn Fonua has been a dance fitness instructor of 15 years and her greatest joys are to teach and to see her students express themselves freely through dance. Join her for some high energy movement in Latin, Caribbean, Polynesian and other beloved world rhythms. You will leave with a great sweat and a content soul!

Kite Making: Soaring to New Heights

As you navigate life, including college at SLCC, this event will serve as a reminder that you CAN and WILL rise above any obstacle and barrier that stand between you and your dreams! Kite flying is significant and popular in many countries in Latin America; please join us as we'll be decorating, building, and flying kites as a symbol of overcoming, rising above, and accomplishing goals!

Latinx Heritage Celebration 2020-2021: "Breaking Barriers with Our Voices”

This year's theme is in direct response to the civil and racial unrest we are currently experiencing in this country. A student member of this committee suggested we plan and host events where our voices are heard in multiple ways sending a powerful and unequivocal message that as members of the Latinx community: "¡aqui estamos y no mos vamos!"We are excited to host a series of events that give voice to Latinx community within and outside of Salt Lake Community College to resist injustice, empower each other, and celebrate our myriad of identities as Latinxs.

Our story: Empowering communities through student lenses (Student Panel)

We invite you to hear from Latina, Latino and Latinx students from across SLCC campuses and academic programs who will share in their unique experiences at SLCC. Join us in learning from our students about various their realities and perspectives. The panelists will focus on three main areas (1) The relationship between Latinx students and the education system (the good and the bad), (2) The importance of pursuing a higher education for Latinx individual, families, and communities, and (3) The ways in which students can participate in their schools and communities.

Cultural Resistance Banner Workshop

This community-oriented workshop is a hands-on opportunity to learn about banner-making as well as to engage in a discussion about how Latin American communities have participated in global resistance efforts against machismo, racism, anti-Blackness, homophobia, transphobia, settler-colonialism, and environmental destruction. Join us for one or all four workshops! For the safety of our communities, all participants must wear face coverings and abide to social distancing guidelines.

The Infiltrators - A Discussion with LUChA

The Infiltrators highlights the stories of undocumented activists who were purposefully detained and went undercover at a private, for-profit detention facility in Florida. Once inside, they helped release detainees, reunited immigrants with their families, and revealed the injustices immigrants must endure while in detention during the current political climate. Join LUChA (Latinos/as/xs United for Change & Activism) to breakdown the different themes presented in the film as it pertains to the undocumented community. Those who register for this event will receive a link to watch The Infiltrators at no cost.

Hit the G.A.S. – The Infiltrators Edition

Join us on your lunch break as we fuel conversation on gender and sexuality in pop culture artifacts. This week we will discuss themes presented in The Infiltrators as it pertains to the intersectionality of various identities within the undocumented community. We will be joined by Marco Saavedra and Viridiana Martinez, the two activists in the film, as well. Those who register for this event will receive a link to watch The Infiltrators at no cost.

Salt Lake Community College's Latinx Heritage Celebration Committee invites you to join us for an unveiling of an art installation for Latinx SLCC students by Latinx SLCC students. You may attend in person at one of our three event locations or remotely via Webex (log in information coming soon).

The three-piece mural symbolizes resilience, courage, and the rich cultures represented in our Latinx community in the greater Salt Lake City area and at SLCC. One piece of the mural will be permanently displayed at the Taylorsville, West Valley Center, and South City campuses as a distinct reminder that we matter, we are here, and we are not going anywhere!

Film Series Screening: De Lo Mio

The Latinx Heritage Celebration Committee presents our final event for our film series by screening De Lo Mio. A short synopsis of the film: Three siblings reunite in the Dominican Republic and face their demons as they let go of their last connection to their motherland.

Regardless of where in the world we find ourselves, members of the Latinx community remember our roots. This knowing informs how we navigate the world and how we show up in spaces where work towards more diversity, equity, equality, and justice takes place. Knowing our roots grounds us and allows us to show up as our most authentic selves.

Redefining Chicanidad

As a part of Latinx Heritage Celebration, we present a family-friendly event for ALL to learn about and celebrate the expansion of the Chicanx community, culture, and history. Enjoy cultural fold, music, workshops, literature, and connect with important resources.

Redefining Chicanidad will be an open house event at the West Valley Center, where students, staff, faculty, and community members are welcome to learn about and celebrate the massive expansion of the Chicanx community, culture and history. At the event, participants will be able to view a variety of lowriders and bikes, while receiving an introduction about Lowrider Studies by Xris Macias, director of the University of Utah Dream Center. Daysi Hernandez, an SLCC faculty member for the Business department, will focus on what it means to redefine Chicanidad and the movement for social equity and justice. Anthony Nocella, an SLCC faculty member for the Criminal Justice and Criminology department, will focus on the realities of the school-to-prison pipeline and the impact of the Utah Reintegration Project (URP) via a student panel. This is a family-friendly event, providing an opportunity for ALL to enjoy cultural food, music, workshops, literature, and overall, be connected to important resources in the community.

Celebrating Utah Latinx Writers Poetry Reading with Jaqueline Balderrama

Jacqueline Balderrama is the author of Now In Color (Perugia Press 2020) and the chapbook, Nectar and Small (Finishing Line Press 2019). She grew up in Southern California and earned a BA from UC Riverside and a MFA from Arizona State University. While at ASU, she was involved in the Letras Latinas literary initiative and the ASU Prison Education Program. She recently completed her PhD in English with a Specialization in Creative writing at the University of Utah.
Balderrama currently lives in Tempe, AZ where she is the Virginia G. Piper Fellow-in-Residence and a Clinical Assistant Professor at Arizona State University for the 2021-22 academic year. Her poems have received the 2013 Ina Coolbrith Memorial Poetry Prize, won a 2019 Intro Journal Award, and been published in Blackbird, Poet Lore and other journals. Balderrama serves as poetry editor for Iron City Magazine. Her recent work is invested in hybrid identities, monstrosity, and environmental concerns.

Remembering our Culture: Latinx Dance Workshop (Dance Group)

ROC: Remembering Our Culture is a multicultural dance group comprising of college students. The group was created to support students of color and promote education through the sharing of our cultural identities. This workshop is an opportunity to learn about different cultural dances from Latin America. Be prepared to dance as well as there will be opportunities to learn traditional steps and audience participation. You will learn, dance, and watch as you emerge in the beautiful cultures that Latin American has to offer.

Somos Mas

Somos Más is an Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) program designed to assist and support Students of Color in ACHIEVING their academic goals and OWNING their educational journey. It focuses on retention, academic excellence, and completion/graduation through a holistic approach led by individuals of similar backgrounds and supported by those wanting to assist People of Color in succeeding!

Service Projects

Fall 2020 – Partnership with the Crossroads Urban Center – put together 100 Hygiene Kits to give to members of the community in need

The current pandemic and the recent spike in COVID cases has hit low-income communities particularly hard. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Somos Mas Program wants to be part of preventing the spread by providing families in need with essentials that promote better hygiene practices and, as a result, help flatten the curve and prevent the spread. After speaking with community partners, we identified a significant need for hygiene kits. With Winter coming, these simple hygiene products can help stop the spread of germs and help people stay safer. Somos Mas has partnered with Jessica Roadman and the Crossroads Urban Center to put together and distribute 100 hygiene kits full of essentials to help prevent the spread of COVID.

Latinx Lunch and Learn - Summer 2022

The Latinx Lunch & Learn event serves as an opportunity for Latinx students to connect, build community among peers, and receive additional information and resources to ensure their success while at SLCC community college. We share stories and experiences that help students feel welcomed and seen and remind them that they are not alone in their pursuit of higher education.
