Mastering ESL Scholarship Spring 2025:

Mastering scholarship is available for students to apply. International students can apply as well. The reward of the scholarship is $300. It opens on November 18th, 2024, and closes on February 3rd, 2025. To apply, please fill out the form through this link:

Full Description:

The ESL Program at Salt Lake Technical College offers five levels of ESL instruction leading to SLTC certificate programs or SLCC degree programs. The Versant English Placement Test is given to determine the level at which a student should begin. Testing is arranged at the time students start to register for the program. Students can take ESL classes in reading/writing, listening/speaking, grammar, pronunciation, and conversation.

The mission of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Salt Lake Technical College is to empower students by improving their English language proficiency, equipping them with the essential skills to pursue technical education, enroll in academic programs, and integrate into the workforce.

How to Apply:

Steps to Enrollment
  1. Apply to SLCC
    Complete an online Application for Admission.
  2. Take ESL Placement Test
    1. After admission, you will receive an email in your Bruinmail from ‘Scorekeeper’ with information on accessing your test. You will have two weeks from receiving that email to complete your test. Once you have started your test you must complete it within 24 hours in one sitting.
    2. If you did not receive an email or have questions regarding your test, please contact the ESL Department at 801-957-3341. For questions or support in Spanish please call 801-957-3337 or 801-957-3345
  3. Make an Appointment with an Academic Advisor
    Meet with an advisor after completing the assessment. (If needed)
  4. Register for ESL classes.

International Students

International students (students on a nonimmigrant visa) must complete the International Student Application for admission through the International Student Services before being able to enroll.

There are no required minimum hours of enrollment, EXCEPT for international (F-1) students who must attend full time, which is 12 credits each semester.

ESL Placement

The ESL Placement Test is used to determine your knowledge in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It determines the appropriate level of courses based on your ability. The test is administered using a home computer with a microphone or online at SLCC Testing Services.

Book Information:

You will automatically receive access to an e-book for Reading/Writing and Listening/Speaking courses when you enroll. A tablet or computer is highly recommended for these courses. Buying a physical copy of the book is optional but recommended, especially if you do not have a tablet or computer.

For elective courses, students are required to buy a physical copy of the book. Textbooks for elective courses will be used for two levels. (i.e. Levels 1-2 use one book and Levels 3-4 use one book).
