A Pathway into Medicine

Paisley Mitchell’s high school journey has been bumpy; not feeling like she fits in has led to a lack of motivation and some miserable days. She confessed, “I haven’t enjoyed high school. I’m so thankful to be almost done.”

The introduction of early enrollment at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) in the surgical technical program is a light at the end of a very long tunnel for Paisley. Since joining it, she feels she has finally found a place to belong. “This program has been one of the biggest blessings of my life," she said.

Paisley has long been drawn to a medical career, specifically as a pediatric surgeon or pediatrician. She believes that the surgical tech program will help her get a foot in the door and help her determine which path to take. “I’m also still young, and this program gives me lots of options.”

Thanks to the Metallica Scholars Initiative, Paisley can focus solely on her studies and not worry about tuition costs. “I know that this program will become very demanding, so solely being able to focus on my studies has been and will continue to be a tremendous help to my education, she said.”

Paisley is open to possibilities regarding her future workplace as long as she is making a difference in this world. “My ultimate goal is just to help people, she said.” Paisley advises others to consider their life goals carefully. For those who decide to pursue college, she recommends exploring various institutions, especially SLCC, for the resources they offer. She says the decision about college “should be one you should make for yourself and something you’re passionate about.”

Paisley expresses her gratitude towards Metallica for their generous scholarship. She believes that the band’s initiative is extraordinary, and she thanks them for making the path to success possible for her. “I’ve always wanted to go into medicine but haven’t always known how I will get there, said Paisley.” “You guys have made the path so much clearer for me; I am grateful. Keep doing what you’re doing; you’re changing people’s lives!”
