A Believer in Second Chances
Stephanie Good's journey is one of commitment to personal growth. After graduating high school, Stephanie started attending Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) with plans on majoring in communications. But she soon lost interest. “My heart just wasn’t into studying communications,” said Stephanie. “I would take breaks between semesters to focus on my mental health.”
After spending some time away from school, Stephanie returned to SLCC to earn an associate's degree in general studies in 2021. It was during this period that she found her true calling in surgical technology.
"A friend initially introduced me to surgical tech,” said Stephanie. “It sounded interesting, so I looked further into the program at SLCC, and it just clicked for me. My passion for science and the human body found a perfect match!”
The surgical technology program at SLCC prepares students to work as part of a surgical team under the supervision of a physician or registered nurse. Half of the class is made up of early enrollment students, and the other half is made up of students on a more traditional pathway. Both groups earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in surgical technology and obtain a nationally recognized certification allowing them to work anywhere in the United States as a Surgical Technologist.
“When I was first in the program, I was working two jobs because I support myself financially,” said Stephanie. “The surg tech program is rigorous, and I knew I needed to make some changes in my life so I could dedicate my time to studying. After leaving the program, my professor encouraged me to reapply but with renewed focus. I was also encouraged to apply for the Metallica Scholars Initiative scholarship. When I found out I had been awarded, I was in shock! I have never received a scholarship before, and to know someone like Metallica believed in me, that meant a lot!"
Her parents shared in her excitement. "My dad is a huge Metallica fans, so when he found out his daughter was awarded a scholarship from one of their favorite bands, he was so happy!” said Stephanie. “For him, it was a special moment because he’s a musician and plays guitar—and he had the opportunity to meet the band years ago while they were on tour. Having his daughter get this scholarship was an incredible experience for him, too!”
Receiving the scholarship led to a positive shift both academically and personally. "Now I'm getting good grades and only working one job—I'm in a much better place, mentally and financially,” said Stephanie. “I want to thank Metallica for giving me this amazing opportunity. I will remember this forever!"
Stephanie will be graduating in May 2024 with an AAS degree in surgical technology and is excited about the many possibilities a career in surgical technology offers. "I'm most interested in reconstructive surgery. I love the aspect of helping someone feel better about themselves. I would also like to work in the ER. With surg tech, every day is different, and I can help save lives!"
For Stephanie, returning to school and achieving her goals has been a life-altering journey. “This experience has shown me that if you continue and not give up, things do get better,” she said. “I believe in second chances—just look where I am now!"
