From Fan to Future Surgical Tech

Born and raised in Riverton, Utah, Tyler Crapo graduated from Riverton High School in June 2025, where he studied American Sign Language (ASL) and has been creating short-story videos for fun. “I love creating childhood dream videos influenced by early 2000’s visuals,” said Tyler. “It’s a creative outlet that I enjoy.”

But Tyler’s interests extend beyond storytelling and making films. He has been fascinated by surgery from an early age, which led him to take surgical technology classes at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) during his senior year of high school. “I’ve always been interested in surgery and learning about the human body” he said. “And when I found out about the surgical technology program, it just seemed like the perfect path.”

During his first semester, Tyler learned about the Metallica Scholars Initiative from his program director. “When I first applied, I thought it was cool that it was actually the band, Metallica!” When he found out he received the scholarship, he was thrilled. “When I received my award letter, I had to show my parents—they were so excited for me! Plus, they are big Metallica fans.”

The scholarship has helped him focus on school without the stress of finances. “With this scholarship, I’m able to gain real experience,” said Tyler. “I used to work while attending school, but now that I’m in this program, I’m taking 18 credit hours which doesn’t leave much time to focus on a job.”

Tyler is currently earning an Associate of Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology and plans to graduate in January 2026. After graduation, he wants to immediately start working in the field with a focus in reconstructive surgery. “It impacts a person’s life so much and helps them get back to doing the things they enjoy,” said Tyler. “Reconstructive surgery is truly life changing!” Tyler is also considering continuing to a four-year university.

“I am so grateful to Metallica for their support!” said Tyler. “They are making it easier to move into adult life. To Metallica: keep on being awesome!”
