Yes! In fact, we encourage it. Reach out to us and we will help you get organized.

Yes! You can bring any type of culminating piece to Bruin Brains and then communicate about your work process with event attendees.

It is 100% free to attend Bruin Brains. Simply register and show up on the day of the event.

Any SLCC student or pre-college student is encourage to register and present at Bruin Brains. The only rule is that you must register for the event in order to present on the day of the event.

Please email research material requests to tanasia.valdez@slcc.edu. We have limited but dedicated funds for this purpose.

Student researchers are welcome to present posters, oral presentations, demonstrations, or a showpiece.

The poster size that work best for this conference is 36X48.

In Microsoft PowerPoint, use File > Page Setup or Design > Page Setup to define a poster’s dimensions.

  • Select the "Orientation" as Landscape.
  • Enter in the width and height of your poster. Standard sizes are 36" x 48".
  • Place photos, text, graphs, etc. as you want them to look on a poster.
  • Send poster file to tanasia.valdez@slcc.edu before November 28 to have it printed for free. We'll bring it to Bruin Brains for you and set it up on an easel, if you like.

You can see posters in person, from past Bruin Brains Research Conferences, in the TRIO hallway located in CT 2nd Floor. Below are also some examples:

Research Process Example

  1. Choose a topic of interest
    1. Explore the topic on easily accessible platforms (YouTube, TikTok, Google, personal stories, etc) to confirm your interest
    2. Once you are committed to your topic, identify a question associated with the topic of your choice
  2. Research the topic in the SLCC Database (1-2 weeks)

    2. (contact info for research assistant) Set up an appointment for one on one help with the dedicated SLCC research assistant
    3. Come to TRIO for questions about how to find the database and how to navigate
    4. Use a resource tracking system to keep track of your articles
      1. Zotero, Excel, EndNote etc
  3. Synthesize your research findings (1 week)
    1. Reflect about each article, framework, or theory
    2. Note the similarities and differences
  4. Make your own conclusion (1 week)
    1. Reflect on any gaps or missing information that you didn’t find
  5. Format the information on a poster (1 week)
    1. Plug in information by section (see poster template)
    2. Have your poster reviewed by a trusted source (advisor, friend, professor, teacher)
    3. Email to tanasia.valdez@slcc.edu for printing by Nov. 28, 2022
