Angela H Brown
Owner & Executive Editor of SLUG Magazine
I chose to attend SLCC's photography program for the knowledgeable instructors, progressive course curriculum and top-notch education for a fraction of the price compared to similar programs. I gained formative relationships, practical business skills and the photographic know-how to capture and art direct editorial layouts, commercial photoshoots and more. I highly recommend SLCC's photography program to anyone looking to be visually inspired, intellectually challenged and wanting "more" from a college experience. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

After retirement as a scientist, I wanted to advance my knowledge and skills in photography. The photography program at SLCC far exceeded my expectations. The program taught me the technical details related to the camera, advanced professional lighting, and post-processing combined with a diverse, creative outlook. I now have the knowledge and confidence to take on any assignment and can anticipate and respond to the things which will go less than perfectly. Thank you SLCC!

My time at SLCC was crucial for where I am now in my career. This program really shines in creative, technical, and hands-on learning, compared to university programs that are more focused on art theory. It gave me the tools I needed to start assisting right out of college and produce imagery for commercial clients shortly after. The photo community garnered at SLCC is also a huge draw where they're always bringing in working photographers and other related trades to get a contemporary, balanced, and realistic view of the media industry at this point in time. Consequently, my crew are alumni of SLCC, who I've been working with for years.

I chose the SLCC photo program because I wanted to learn the technical skills in lighting and photography that would enable me to be a working photographer. The program, professors, and facilities helped me learn and grow into the photographer I am today. As lead photographer for an ecommerce company studio and freelance fashion photographer, I use the principles of lighting and problem-solving skills taught to me constantly. The best decision I ever made was attending SLCC's photography program.

Using oil as my medium, I paint portraits and still-life. I wanted to improve my portrait reference photos. For this reason, I enrolled in the SLCC photography courses. To my surprise I learned far more than I expected! Learning to see light and how it illuminates everything in our world was amazing. Each photography course reinforced and deepened every artistic principle I was taught in the foundational art and design classes I have taken. All artists, regardless of their medium, would benefit by studying photography. Everything I do in art stepped up to a new level. How I see light changed. I discovered hidden talents and I contribute more to the community. My grandchildren see my example that learning can continue well into retirement. My life is enriched!

I couldn't speak more highly of the SLCC photo program. I graduated in 2017, and since then have been able to support myself with the skills I learned during my time there. It's a wonderful program that teaches you the necessities to get out and start working in the real world. Within my years of working in the industry, I've noticed that a large number of photographers I've met and worked with have also gone through the SLCC program. It's a true testament to the value of the program.

What can I say? The photo program at Salt Lake Community College has given me a career and work way of life I could have only dreamed of. The teachers created a unique curriculum that helped me focus on my goals and aspirations and ultimately transformed me into the commercial photographer I am today.

As a student of the SLCC photo program, I learned quickly that my long-time dream of making a living in photography was not only possible but was also going to take a lot of constant work. What I did not expect was to absorb as much as possible in any subject beforehand, and to this day, still, land on the foundations and skills I obtained during my time in the SLCC photo program. Not only is photography my current day job, but it is also my passion on my weekends. I thank the creative thinking and technical skills earned for my efficiency and curiosity to keep progressing in this diverse field.

Artists with no training only limit their own ability to create. Working as a graphic designer overseeing and directing multiple marketing projects, I'm now able to carry my artistic vision to a whole new level because of my education experiences in the Visual Art & Design program at SLCC. I completed both a Graphic Design and Photography degree, where Photography, Design, and Marketing support the perfect mix as an art director. SLCC not only gave me the tools to become successful and guide me on my professional journey, but I also made new friendships that supported and inspired me. I encourage any artist to develop their potential at SLCC and find a successful career within the art industry.
