HESI Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Only two programs in the School of Health Sciences require prospective students to take this exam before they submit their application. Check with your admission advisor for details.
To schedule the HESI, you must use RegisterBlast. A link to this scheduling program is located on the “Health Science Assessments” web page and other SLCC Health Sciences admission web pages.
You must schedule your test at least 72 hours in advance to give enough time for the Testing Center to procure exams and complete the scheduling process. If you have taken the test previously and wish to take it again to improve your score there is a two-week waiting period from the time you complete the exam until you can retest. Your retest must still be scheduled 72 hours in advance of the scheduled HESI exam date. If special circumstances dictate, the Manager of the Testing Center can over-ride these periods. Call 801-957-6225 to arrange this. “I forgot to do it in time” is not a special circumstance.
There are several different testing and assessment centers for SLCC on different campuses. The HESI exam is only provided at the Jordan Campus in the Health Sciences Building room 054. Room 054 is located on the lowest level of the building on the south side of the atrium. You may also take the HESI A2 at another institution.
You will need to prove your identification using a government issued ID card such as a driver’s license, SLCC one card, passport or state issued ID card. The name on the ID card must match the name used to make your appointment and the Evolve account you have set up. The Testing Center will provide a calculator and other items you may need for the test. You will not be allowed to take any personal items into the testing area such as your own calculator, pens, cell phones, MP3 players, books or notes. There are lockers in the Testing Center where you can secure personal items while you are taking the exam.
Most of the Health Science programs only allow you to attempt the HESI twice in a two year period. Some allow three attempts. Check with your admission advisor for the details of your program.
Yes, you will have to wait two weeks from the day you complete your first test until the time you can start your second attempt. You can however begin the process of scheduling your second attempt as early as you would like. During this time period you should take advantage of the remediation resources offered by Evolve so that you can improve your score. Your second attempt will cover the same topics as the initial test, but it will be a different version of the exam and the questions will be different.
Currently (summer 2020) the SLCC programs require a cumulative score from the HESI so you will need to retake the entire exam. Requirements do change from time to time so check with your admission advisor for the details of your program.
You are allowed 6 hours to complete all the modules of the test. Most people take less than four hours to complete the test. Unless you have special accommodations, you must complete the test on the same day you start. If you have double time accommodations, you must return the following day to complete your test.
Students are allowed to take short breaks during the exam in order to use the restroom or to get a drink of water or a snack. Drinks and food are not allowed in the testing labs but you may bring them and leave them in a locker in the Testing Center. During breaks students are not allowed to look at reference materials, use the internet or check email.
There are eight or nine required modules on the test, depending on the program to which you are applying. You can complete the modules in any order you would like. Most modules are between 30 to 55 questions long.
Yes. These modules are 14 and 15 questions long and do not affect your assessment score. There are no correct or incorrect answers for these modules but completing them may help academic advisors provide better counseling should you need it during your studies.
As you complete each module your score for the module will be displayed on the main menu screen. When you complete the exam you can check your score on any internet connected computer by logging in to your account. Your scores are automatically made available to the Admission Office, so there are no actions you need to take to provide scores to Health Science.
As of Summer, 2020, SLCC charges $110 for the basic HESI A2 exam. Some programs require that you take a Critical Thinking module which does not cost extra. These fees are subject to change. There have been price increases in the past and when you schedule a time to take the exam RegisterBlast will display the current fees.
You will pay for the HESI by credit card online when scheduling your exam using RegisterBlast. Once you schedule an exam and make a payment, you may cancel your test and you will receive a refund of your test fee, less a $20 cancelation charge. You can reschedule an existing appointment for a $20 fee. The cost of the HESI allows you to take the entire test one time and you also get access to the Evolve remediation resources.
There are many resources available. The HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review is available for purchase at SLCC Bookstores and other stores or websites that sell textbooks. The School of Health Science has several copies of the Exam Review that you can check out and use without charge. There are other reference books available that help you study for nursing or health science entrance exams and a search of the internet or inquiring at your local library should provide titles. A search of the internet will provide many sites that will help you study. Some offer practice exams and sample questions.
You are not evaluated on, nor required to complete Chemistry or Physics modules and you should not see these modules on the version of the HESI A2 exam you will be given.
Yes. Scores are calculated as you complete each module and the results of your entire exam are available to Health Sciences Admissions as soon as you complete the exam.
You will need an Evolve account (user name and password) to login on the day you take your exam. This account will also allow you access to study material and remediation resources provided by Evolve. This account will be used if you choose to retake the exam or if you take the exam over more than one session.
