Please join us on Friday September 9 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. as we kick off our 2022-23 season with an opening reception for "Bea Hurd: This Lawn Only Grows Banana Bread."
Bea is a Salt Lake City based artist who predominantly works in sculpture made from found and unconventional materials. She received a BFA in Sculpture Intermedia from the University of Utah in 2021 and won second place at last year's President's Art Show for her piece "Deflation of the Flesh," 2020.
Bea's practice centers on the interconnections of sexuality, gender, and consumerism. Her work is materially based: derives its meaning from the items and materials chosen to be worked with. She takes inspiration from materials of everyday life that tend to be discarded or seen as worthless. Currently, her practice focuses on the relationship between queer-hood, materialism, and suburbia; where she examines the way material culture and upbringing can shape a person's understanding of their identity. The objects present in Bea's practice become self-reflexive creative outlets.
