MERIEM WAKRIM & JANIECE // NATURE & GEOMETRY
May 11 - June 22, 2023
Edna Runswick Taylor Foyer
South City Campus, East Entrance
"Nature and Geometry," a new exhibition at the Edna Runswick Taylor Foyer at Salt Lake Community College, features works by Utah artist Janiece Murray and Moroccan artist Meriam Wakrim.
Murray utilizes traditional techniques including gilding, mathematics and painting with handmade watercolors, as well as her spiritual and religious beliefs, to depict the geometric patterns and proportions found all around us. She writes “… one day I was stuck by the similarity between a geometric pattern I love to use in my work and forsythia, a beautiful flowering spring bush that I also love. Through this series I want to analyze and share some of the beauty and geometry that can be found in nature and its design.”
Wakrim grew up in a countryside near the sea in her home of Casablanca. Her surreal landscapes are made with a combination of traditional and digital media and capture an enhanced, nearly magical reality with intense colors, whimsical creatures, alien-looking flora and moody evening scenes. “It is important to remember nature as all the living things. When we can observe with all our consciousness the beauty of a tree, of the light of a moment of the day, of the water of a river, it is a feeling of great freedom. Sometimes when the mind is silent, we can enjoy these flights of feeling and living together in harmony with everything else. Borders disappear for a moment.”
Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday May 11 at 5:00 PM.
The exhibit will be on view through June 22, 2023.
