Technology Requirements

Before beginning your coursework, it’s important to ensure that your technology is ready for design work. The Interior Design Program relies on industry-standard software and digital tools that require a capable computer and reliable internet connection. Below is everything you need to get started and stay connected throughout the program.

Computer Specifications

Your computer should be powerful enough to handle large 3D models, renderings, and design files. A laptop or desktop that meets or exceeds these specifications is recommended:

  • Processor (CPU): Intel i7 or Apple M1/M2 equivalent
  • Memory (RAM): Minimum 16 GB (32 GB preferred for Revit or rendering)
  • Storage: At least 512 GB SSD for speed and reliability
  • Graphics (GPU): Dedicated graphics card with 4 GB VRAM or more (NVIDIA GTX/RTX or AMD equivalent)
  • Operating System: Windows 11 (for full Revit compatibility) or macOS for Adobe-based work
  • Display: 15” or larger, full HD or higher resolution

If you use a Mac, you’ll need access to a Windows environment for Revit, which runs only on Windows. SLCC provides access to campus computers equipped with all required programs if you need additional resources.

Software

You will gain access to professional-grade design software throughout the program, including:

  • AutoCAD – for drafting and construction documentation
  • Revit – for building information modeling (BIM) and interior architecture
  • Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) – for presentations and design visualization

Students can access licenses for these applications through their courses.

Campus Labs and Printing

SLCC provides access to computer labs, plotters, and printers for high-quality design outputs. Students can use these spaces to work on large-scale drawings, renderings, and project presentations. Students have access to the following computer labs that are Architecture and Interior Design designated:

Locations:

Technology Building (TB) 301B
Technology Building (TB) 305B

Hours:

Mon – Thurs: 8am to 10pm
Friday: 8am to 3pm
Sat – Sun: Closed

Advising and Academic Support

Meeting regularly with your advisor ensures that you stay on course for graduation, understand transfer opportunities, and get the most value from your SLCC Interior Design education.

How to Schedule Advising:

Professional Prep and Certification

Understanding how your coursework connects to professional expectations is an important part of your education in the SLCC Interior Design Program. The skills and knowledge you gain here directly align with national standards for professional interior designers, helping you build a strong foundation for certification and career growth.

Preparing for the NCIDQ Exam

The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam is the leading professional certification recognized across the United States and Canada. It tests a designer’s understanding of building systems, codes, construction standards, contract administration, and design application.

At SLCC, your coursework is designed to support many of the competencies covered in the NCIDQ, including:

  • Space planning, lighting, and materials selection
  • Building codes, accessibility, and safety standards
  • Design communication through drafting, Revit, and presentation tools
  • Sustainability and professional ethics

While additional education or work experience may be required before sitting for the exam, your time at SLCC provides the technical and conceptual foundation necessary to prepare for this next step.
