MATH 0920 FAQ
MATH 0920 - Foundations for Math Success
Please watch the video and read the course description on the Math 0920 page.
All students start with and register for Math 0920. During the first week of the semester, students will attend Math 0920 orientation. In orientation, students will work with teachers to decide if they can complete the coursework in 1 semester, 2 semesters, or 3 semesters.
Based on decisions made in orientation, students are placed into a group called a cohort. (A Math 0920 cohort is a group of students moving though the course material at the same pace.)
- Cohort 1 students are the fastest group. These students can expect to:
- Complete the course material in one semester.
- Take an exam every two weeks.
- Skip modules on whole numbers and fractions and jump right into integers.
- Cover Modules 3-8 in the first (and only) semester.
- Will need to plan on at least 12 hours of homework and self-study a week (that’s 2 hours for every credit hour).
- Cohort 2 students are the middle-paced group. These students can expect to:
- Complete the course material in two semesters.
- Can expect to take an exam every three weeks.
- Do not skip any modules.
- Cover Modules 1-4 in the first semester and 5-8 in the second semester.
- Will need to plan on at least 6 hours of homework and self-study a week (that’s 2 hours per 3 credits).
- Will register for Math 0925 in their second semester.
- Cohort 3 students will take the longest to complete the course. These students can expect to:
- Complete the course material in three semesters.
- Can expect to take an exam every four weeks.
- Do not skip any modules.
- Cover Modules 1-2 in the first semester, 3-5 in the second semester, and Modules 6-8 in the third semester.
- Will need to plan on at least 4 hours of homework and self-study a week (that’s 2 hours per 2 credits).
- Will register for Math 0935 in their second semester.
- Will register for Math 0938 in their third semester.
- Regardless of the Cohort, all students will pay for the 6-credit course for the first semester. Students completing the course in 2 or 3 semesters will see 0 credits for the following semesters and will not be charged for additional credits.
- Students who complete the course in the first semester will receive a letter grade at the end of the semester.
- Students in Cohort 2 or Cohort 3 will receive an “EX”, or an extended grade, until all coursework is complete. Once students finish their coursework, “EX” grades will be replaced with the letter grade they earned after completing the entire Math 0920 series.
Math 0920 is only offered as an in-person class on the Taylorsville-Redwood Campus. If you’ve filtered the classes at the beginning of the registration process, go back and remove all filters.
Math 0925, 0935, and 0938 are not stand-alone classes and require special permission to register.
If you are in Cohort 2 or 3 and are unable to register, contact lindsey.page@slcc.edu or math@slcc.edu.
If you are in Cohort 2 or Cohort 3, you will carry an "EX" grade until you complete the entire Math 0920 series. An “EX” grade may impact your financial aid eligibility. You can contact a financial aid advisor to learn more about how this class may impact your financial aid eligibility.
