How to Apply
To apply, login to Scholarship Universe using your MySLCC username and password. Answer the eligibility questions and ensure that you answer the question "What is your Utah residency status?" by selecting Status Not Listed to be shown Bruin Dreams as a scholarship opportunity.
Under Matches, select Bruin Dreams and confirm your eligibility once more to move on to the next step.
Applicants will need to answer two essay questions:
Note: There is not a minimum or maximum requirement for the word count. Answer the questions in detail to the best of your ability.
- What is a major issue that the immigrant community faces, and how will obtaining an education at Salt Lake Community College help you address or solve this issue?
- Describe a problem that you have observed in any of the following places, like your community, state, country, or world. Is the problem social, economic, environmental, or health-related? Why do you consider it a problem? Reflect on how this problem has affected you or those around you.
- Then, consider how a college education will support you in finding a solution to that problem. Why do you believe that the degree or field of study you want to pursue will support you in finding a solution? What skills or knowledge will you gain that can help you in being part of the solution?
- Write a short statement about your current financial need as an undocumented immigrant or asylum seeker. How does it affect you being able to afford your studies at SLCC? Explain how you plan to cover the remainder of your educational expenses and achieve your academic goals.
- Detail your financial circumstances, including any specific challenges you’ve encountered. Next, outline your financial strategy — how you plan to cover the remaining costs of your education? Discuss scholarships, job opportunities, and other financial resources you are exploring outside of this scholarship.
Scholarship Writing Tips
Keep in mind that these tips can be applied to any other scholarship opportunity you may apply for.- Listing extracurricular activities completed in the past or that you are currently participating in.
- Having a current copy of your school transcript.
- Referring to previous letters of recommendation.
- Preparing a calendar with deadlines.
- What is the theme for the scholarship?
- What is the essay question asking you to provide?
- What type of scholarship is it?
- Who is your audience?
- What is the word count?
Your life and experiences are interesting and important!
- Less Detail: "over the last 4 years, I've had the privilege of helping shape lives."
- More Detail: "After 4 years of tutoring nearly 150 individuals in math and science, I feel my own STEM skills have improved substantially."
"In the last 4 years of community service, I have gained leadership skills through many diverse interactions with people from all backgrounds."
Create a visual for your audience — what emotion are you trying to convey?
- Example: "Helmet? Check. Apron? Check. Tires pumped? Check. Biking the thirty-five minutes each evening to the cafe and back to work a six-hour shift was exhausting, but my family's encouragement and gratitude for the extra income was worth it…"
Prompts will often ask you about a hardship you've overcome. This is a chance to understand a student's resilience and ability to problem solve. The story is important but focus on what you have learned from those experiences and how it has helped you get to where you are at today.
Done. Now What?
- Leave it alone and come back to it later.
