FAQ

Any students can apply! All participants must be a SLCC student and willing to take the credit-bearing course tied to the Study Away program. Students that are studying at other universities are welcome but must take the SLCC course.

To apply for a program, go to the program page you would like to apply for and click the “Apply Now” button at the top of the page. You will be routed to SLCC Groups, the platform that houses all Engaged Learning forms. The application will then guide you through the questions necessary to apply. Be prepared to include a copy of your receipt or screenshot of your program deposit, photo I.D., and health insurance (health insurance can be submitted later in the semester if you do not currently have health insurance.) You can submit your deposit through the online payment portal by clicking on the “Make a Payment” button located on the program website.

Yes! All Study Away programs are tied to a credit bearing course, and participation in the course is required.

Students must have a passing grade in the course at least one month before travel occurs. Students who don't have a passing grade will not be permitted to participate in the travel portion of the course.

It depends on the program length and destination, but domestic programs typically cost between $1,000-$1,800 and Study Abroad programs typically cost between $3,000-$4,000. Please check the individual program webpages to see specific costs for each program.

Programs vary in length, and it depends on the specific program. The Domestic Study Away Programs are between 7- 10 days (about 1 and a half weeks). Study Abroad Programs are typically between 14- 21 days (about 3 weeks). Please check the individual Program webpages to see specific lengths.

Yes! Check the scholarship page on our website for more information. Some financial aid may cover the cost of the tuition but not cover the program fees. Please visit with your financial aid advisor for more information about financial aid and tuition fees.

Program costs cover rooms and boarding for the duration of the program, some meals, in-country transportation, and most excursions done with the group. Program costs DO NOT cover tuition for the course, baggage fees, some meals, or souvenirs. It is important to note that some of the Study Away Programs here at SLCC do not cover round trip flight costs to and from program destinations. Programs that require students to purchase their own round trip flights state this on their webpage under "Program Costs".

Check out our scholarships page for options. Students are also welcome to do their own research for other potential scholarships. Look at eligibility requirements and what you qualify for depending on your situation. Finally, follow the instructions for each scholarship and apply accordingly. It is important to pay attention to the details and put your best effort into the application! Most scholarships are competitive, so you will need to put in significant time and effort to receive funding (i.e. free money). Good luck!

Scholarship amounts vary depending on the scholarship. The Engaged Learning Office Diversity Scholarship can pay for up to half of the program fees, but this is decided on a case-by-case basis. Other scholarships can cover anywhere between $250 to the total amount of the program costs.

The spring semester programs leave after commencement, typically the first or second week of May and usually return before the end of the month. The summer programs usually leave late July and return early August. If you are enrolled in summer classes, the spring programs should not conflict with your summer schedule. However, if you are taking summer classes and plan on going on a summer program, please talk to your advisor and professors to see if both are feasible.

Flight arrangements vary depending on the program. Students who do participate in a Study Away Program that requires them to purchase their own round-trip flights will be provided with the following information:

  • Which flight their faculty members will be taking and a provided option to take the same flight.
  • Which airport they need to land in.
  • Arrangements on meeting times and locations to connect with the rest of the group.

For domestic flights to our Domestic Study Away Programs, we do not recommend using budget airlines. These flights are typically delayed or cancelled, which could potentially cause you to miss a portion of your program.

As of now, the only programs we have available are those listed on our website. If any new programs are proposed, we will let you know as soon as possible! Please send us an email with your information and program of interest so we can inform you when we have more information.

Since all our payments are done online, you can make as many or as little payments as you’d like, as long as you meet each payment deadline listed on the individual program pages.

Yes. Since all the programs are linked to credit courses, you will receive a grade, just like any other class you would take at SLCC. Students must complete all required pre-trip course work and in-country assignments to pass the class.

Students must have a passing grade in the course at least one month before travel occurs. Students who don't have a passing grade will not be permitted to participate in the travel portion of the course.

Like with any travel, circumstances will arise where the programs will no longer be able to run. If this situation ever arises, our office will inform each participant of the current situation regarding refunds and other details.

If you withdraw before the application deadline, you will receive a full refund. However, if you withdraw after the deadline, then the amount we can refund is determined by the Engaged Learning Office. After the application deadline we begin making reservations on the students’ behalf (hotels, excursions, etc.) and cannot guarantee these items will be refundable.

If a program is canceled due to extenuating circumstances, we will do whatever we can to ensure students are refunded for the program fees (e.g. All students participating in Study Abroad during the COVID-19 crisis were fully refunded).

Class sessions depend on the availability of your group and the professor. As the group is finalized and the date gets closer, your professors will reach out to you with more information. Some groups meet once per week and some meet once a month.

Students must have a passing grade in the course at least one month before travel occurs. Students who don't have a passing grade will not be permitted to participate in the travel portion of the course.

After the application deadline has passed and we have enough students for the program to run, the Engaged Learning staff works with the department to grant all registered students' access. After which, the Engaged Learning staff will notify you and you will be able to register just like any other course.
