Free Educational Software

The Architecture Department's Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Building Information Modeling (BIM), graphic and rendering classes require the use of computers and software some of their lecture-based classes also require the same to perform assigned projects and homework. To meet this requirement, there are several options available to the students.

Autodesk, the manufacturer of the CAD/BIM software the architecture department uses, allows students to download and use the software for free.

Software Used: AutoCAD, REVIT, Max Design, etc.

The file size is large, so a good internet connection is recommended.

Sign up for Autodesk Educational Access

Autodesk offers free educational access to their products and services through the provided link. Find the desired product you would like to use, select the product, and follow the instructions to gain access.

Salt Lake Community College offers active students a license for Office 365. These two license types provide access to key applications, storage and processes that are instrumental at the college.

What is included in the Microsoft 365 license for Students?

Student Microsoft 365 license A3:

  • Web versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook (for BruinMail account), OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, Sway and Forms.
  • Desktop versions of Office 365
  • Office apps on up to 5 tablets and 5 phones per user
  • Rights management, data loss prevention, and encryption
  • 5 TB personal cloud storage in OneDrive

Accessing the online environment

Open your browser and go to www.slcc.edu/Office365

  • Students, login using your BruinMail email address:
    • [UserName]@bruinmail.slcc.edu and normal SLCC password.
  • Staff/Faculty: login using [UserName]@slcc.edu

Students enrolled in Architecture, Interior Design, Fashion, Film, and Art courses will be given access to the suite automatically. If you are not enrolled in these courses and need access to the full suite of Adobe Apps, you may request access using the Adobe Request Form.

Accessing the Creative Cloud

Download the Creative Cloud Desktop Application Manager Installer OR navigate your browser to the Adobe homepage.

  • Select Sign In
    • Use your SLCC provided email and password to login
    • STUDENTS: username [at] bruinmail.slcc.edu
  • Select Install Creative Cloud app.

The following programs are also available as a free educational license and may be used in your courses:

SLCC has made their network software available over the internet via All Access. This allows you to access your network files along with Autodesk software on virtually any computer with internet access. Go to All Access and follow directions to download client software on your computer.

University Of Utah School Of Architecture Computer Requirements

The College of Architecture and Planning recommends that students have a mid-range consumer-grade laptop. The College requires that students meet the following example minimum specifications:

  • Machine: PC or Apple
  • CPU: Intel Core i7 (11th generation or newer) or better, AMD Ryzen 7 or better, or M1 (and above) Apple
  • RAM: 32GB minimum
  • Storage: 512GB minimum (solid state drive or flash storage)
  • Graphics: CAD optimized workstation-class (minimum: AMD Radeon RX or NVIDIA RTX [4GB min.] – Apple graphic standards will work in most cases)
  • Display: 1080p (1920×1080) resolution minimum

COMPUTER LAB ACCESS

Located throughout all campuses are labs and classrooms that offer computer access to all students currently enrolled at Salt Lake Community College. For students enrolled in architecture courses, the Taylorsville Redwood Campus has two architecture Building Information Modeling (BIM) / Computer-Aided Design (CAD) computer labs.

  • Mon – Thurs: 8am to 10pm
  • Friday: 8am to 3pm
  • Sat – Sun: Closed
