Transfer Map to the School Of Architecture at The University Of Utah

Below is a map created by the SLCC Architecture department showcasing the educational path to become a licensed architect. If students wish to pursue an architectural license, this map shows the various options there are to achieve this.

Important notes:

Planning for a future in architecture requires careful research and decision-making. While Salt Lake Community College’s Associate of Science (AS) degree in Architecture provides an excellent foundation, it’s important to understand that earning this degree does not guarantee admission to the University of Utah’s School of Architecture, which has a competitive admission rate of only about 40%. To maximize your chances of success, consider applying to multiple institutions and researching their requirements. Each school may have unique prerequisites, application processes, admissions criteria and fees. Work with SLCC’s academic advising team and the advisors at your intended transfer institutions to create a clear plan.

  • The transfer process to the University of Utah requires acceptance into the University PRIOR to Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS), College of Architecture and Planning Admissions.
  • If denied admission into either the University of Utah or the College of Architecture and Planning, students can get a Bachelor degree elsewhere.
  • The 3+ program is designed for students who do not have an undergraduate degree in architecture and a bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university.
  • M.Arch: Master of Architecture
  • B.Arch: Bachelor of Architecture
  • Architectural Experience Program (AXP): Provides a framework to guide you through earning and reporting your professional experience.
  • Architecture License: the documentation that allows an architect to legally practice architecture in a specific jurisdiction.

Important Transfer Information

The Architecture program assists students in preparation for a transfer to a 4-year university or career in the broad field of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) with our Associate of Science (AS) degree. The AS in Architectural Technology is a program that has been specifically designed to be an integral part of the Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and is transferable to the University of Utah through an articulation agreement with the School of Architecture. Students who plan to transfer to the University of Utah should make contact with the School of Architecture Department early in their program.

Students entering SLCC or the U of U have the opportunity to complete the same program in the same number of years. Students begin with Design Foundations, three courses combining thinking and doing with seeing and representing. Simultaneously, students take a broad range of courses including learning about the history and practice of design, the social and ecological impact of the built environment, and getting first-hand experience with industry design tools creating opportunities for students to be hired within the field during school.
