Tax Information

SLCC and other higher education institutions use it to report Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses to students and the IRS. Students or their parent(s) or guardian(s) may be able to claim these expenses as education-related tax credits.

The 1098-T forms for the tax year that ended on December 31st will be issued as soon as possible in January but no later than January 31, as required by IRS regulations. Students will receive a notification in their MySLCC email account when the form becomes available. If you do not opt-in to receive an electronic copy of your 1098-T, we will also mail a physical copy to you.

Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition, fees, and course materials required for a student to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution. Besides the amount SLCC reports in box 1, a student may have additional expenses, such as textbooks and supplies, that may qualify. The following are not qualified tuition and related expenses:

  • Amounts paid for any course or other education involving sports, games, or hobbies unless the course or other education is part of the student’s degree program or is taken to acquire or improve job skills.
  • Charges for room, board, insurance, medical expenses (including student health fees), transportation, and similar personal, living, or family expenses.

The 1098-T is a tax form that SLCC and other institutions of higher education issue to report education-related expenses that could be claimed as part of the American Opportunity Tax Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit. (See this chart to compare the education credits.) The 1098-T is informational only and only includes qualified tuition and related expenses that SLCC is required to report and may not include all eligible education-related expenses. We encourage you to seek additional information directly from the IRS or your tax adviser to determine eligibility for these credits. Visit https://incometax.utah.gov/filing/free-assistance for resources that provide free tax return assistance.

The IRS does not require SLCC to provide 1098-Ts for:

  • Courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program;
  • Nonresident alien students, unless requested by the student;
  • Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships; and
  • Students for whom you do not maintain a separate financial account and whose qualified tuition and related expenses are covered by a formal billing arrangement between an institution and the student’s employer or a governmental entity, such as the Department of Veterans Affairs or the Department of Defense.

No. The address shown on Form 1098-T represents the mailing address we had on your account when we generated it and it may not match your mailing address when you file your taxes. Because the IRS will accept your 1098-T with a previous address, SLCC will not change it. However, you should update your address in MySLCC for any future 1098-Ts and mail from SLCC by following these steps:

  • Log into https://my.slcc.edu/
  • Locate the “Personal Information” card. (Note: If you do not see this card, you can find it by clicking “DISCOVER MORE” at the bottom of the page.)
  • Click “Update Address, Phone or Email” and edit your Mailing Address.

Before assuming errors in your form, consider how the amounts are calculated. The 1098-T reflects charges, payments, and scholarships & grants for the tax/calendar year, not the academic year. For instance, payments, financial aid disbursements, and charges (or adjustments to any of these) may occur in a calendar year before or after the calendar year in which you actually attended and completed.

Payments made towards tuition and fees will only be counted so long as they don’t exceed Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses. Any payment amount over QTRE in the calendar year will not be counted on your 1098-T form.

The IRS requires SLCC to include an SSN or ITIN when reporting Form 1098-T. Failure to furnish your SSN or ITIN to SLCC may result in the IRS imposing a penalty on you.

You can submit it electronically using Form W-9S. (Note: This option requires you to sign in to your MySLCC account using Multi-Factor Authentication. For more information, please see Setting up Multi-Factor Authentication at SLCC). Alternatively, students may print form W-9S and return it to the Office of the Registrar & Academic Records in person or mail it to:
