Community Work-Study
The Community Work-Study (CWS) program, offered through the Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, and Community Engagement at Salt Lake Community College, is part of the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships’ Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program. FWS provides part-time jobs for students with financial need to earn money to help pay for education expenses. FWS jobs are available on and off campus in different career interests and areas of study. Money from FWS is earned, so it does not have to be repaid. Students receive a paycheck like any other job. The goal of the community work-study program at SLCC is to reach 7% of what is allocated for CWS students.
In collaboration with SLCC’s Employer Engagement Team, CWS encourages students to engage with the community and gain leadership skills. Students will learn about how to move their work from service to community engagement through experiential learning while being compensated through federal financial aid. CWS allows students to apply knowledge from the classroom while working with one of Thayne Center’s community partners, building competency-based learning. This experience allows the student to reflect on how their work directly impacts the community.
