Academic Advising Peer Mentors
The SLCC Academic Advising Office is excited to work with excellent Peer Mentors to support students’ needs. The Academic Advising Peer Mentor tuition waiver is your opportunity to gain experience as a peer mentor within the Academic Advising Office. Our Peer Mentors work hard to help other students, build community, and promote available resources at SLCC while developing self-efficacy.
This program offers many roles and opportunities to support the Academic Advising Office in our pursuit to support students, including working ESL students and the University Transfer Center, as well as supporting at events on campus and gaining leadership experience.
As a Peer Mentor, you will be able to:
- Receive a tuition waiver, while working within the Academic Advising Office
- Participate in leadership and college-wide events
- Make new friends and attend social activities with other Peer Mentors
- Build connections with peers and SLCC staff
- Learn about resources available at Salt Lake Community College
How to apply
We offer many Peer Mentor tuition waivers. You can apply through Scholarship Universe. When we have positions available, the Academic Advising Peer Mentor application will have some short essay questions. Peer Mentor positions within Academic Advising are awarded after an interview selection process.

I’m from Guanajuato Mexico and was raised in West Valley City! I am also a first gen student and this is my 4th semester here at SLCC. My goal is to get into the nursing program here at SLCC! Some of my hobbies include going on hikes, watching shows, and caring for plants!

After completing my associate degree, I plan to transfer to BYU to earn a bachelor's degree in Microbiology. My dream is to work in clinical research and contribute to improving public health.

Hi everyone! My name is Bianca, I’m 20 years old, and currently studying Exercise Science/Kinesiology. I love that my major combines the best of both worlds, healthcare and sports. Soccer has been a big part of my life since childhood, which fuels my passion for this field. This is my 5th semester at SLCC and my second year as a Peer Mentor. I love that i get to help fellow students navigate college and make their journey as smooth as possible. I plan to graduate in Spring 2026 before transferring to Weber State to earn my Master’s in Athletic Training.

Hi, I'm from Chile and have lived in the United States for four years. I studied English for the first two years, then came to SLCC. I spent a semester in the ESL program, then switched to my major. I graduated from general education this spring semester, and now in Fall, I'll begin in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program.

I am originally from Mexico but have lived in Salt Lake City for most of my life. I plan on graduating from the Radiologic Technology program here at SLCC in Spring of 2026. It's been one of the most challenging yet rewarding things I've ever done even after working in healthcare for the past 5 years. I have always enjoyed taking care of others and helping those going through difficult times. I look forward to stepping into the work force as a rad tech serving the community.

After completing my associate degree, I plan to transfer to the Utah Valley University to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting. My long-term goal is to become an accountant and build a successful career in the business field.

Hi my name is Ivonne. I am currently studying chemistry at SLCC. I work at an LTAC facility as a pharmacy technician and I love going to concerts. I hope to use my chemistry degree to maybe apply to pharmacy school but I am still undecided. I’m originally from Elk Grove, California, and I hold a bachelor’s degree in History from Azusa Pacific University. I’m now studying Aviation Maintenance at Salt Lake Community College, where I enjoy the mix of hands-on mechanical work and problem-solving. My background includes years of maintenance experience in different industries, which has strengthened my technical skills and adaptability. After completing my program, I’m looking for an aviation path that’s exciting and offers the freedom to explore—whether that’s working in remote locations, traveling with aircraft, or tackling unique maintenance challenges.

Hi, my name is Juan Diego and I am 20 years old. I am from Guanajuato, Mexico and I was raised in Utah. I was originally studying Radiology, but I recently switched to Biology. I plan on transferring to the University of Utah to continue my degree in Biology. My hobbies include soccer, fishkeeping, and collecting physical media. My favorite soccer teams are Club Leon and FC Barcelona, and my favorite artists at the moment are Joy Division, 54 Ultra, and Feng.

I’ve lived in Utah for most of my life, and my passion for healthcare comes from seeing firsthand how important access, support, and advocacy are for patients and students alike. I currently work in a retail pharmacy, where I’ve gained hands-on experience working with diverse populations and building strong communication skills. As a peer mentor, I’m excited to be someone students can feel comfortable talking to, whether that’s about classes, navigating college, or figuring out their next steps.

I am from West Valley, and am currently working on both my Associates of Social Work and Substance Use Disorder Counselor and Behavioral Health Technician certifications. What I like most about my program is how many amazing practitioners and future practitioners I get to meet, learn from, and work alongside! I’ll admit I get a little starstruck at times. After graduation, I plan on furthering my education at the University of Utah.
